What is GEO? GEO vs AEO vs SEO in 2026

The definition, how it differs from AEO and from SEO, and why in 2026 a company needs to show up in Google and in the answers of AI assistants at the same time.

Short answer

GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of getting AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity or Google’s AI Mode to name a company and cite its pages when they write an answer. It differs from SEO in the outcome it targets: SEO goes after a position in a list of links, and GEO after a mention inside a text that people read without clicking. AEO (answer engine optimization) is the earlier term, focused on being the direct answer of a search engine or a voice assistant. In 2026 a brand needs both: GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it.

What is GEO (generative engine optimization)

Definition

GEO, short for generative engine optimization, is the set of changes on and off a website that lead an AI assistant to name a company, recommend it or cite one of its pages when it answers. The goal is not a slot in a list but a place inside the text the model writes.

A generative engine is a system that, instead of returning ten links, writes its own answer from what it has read. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, DeepSeek and Google’s AI Overviews all work this way, and each one decides which brands to name.

The term GEO was introduced in an academic study published in November 2023, which measured how generative engine answers change when the pages they draw on are rewritten. According to that study, certain content changes could raise a source’s visibility in generated answers by up to 40%.

A brand’s presence in the answers for its category can be tracked over time: how to track rankings and AI visibility.

What is AEO and how does it differ from GEO

AEO

AEO, short for answer engine optimization, is the work of making a page the direct answer a search engine or a voice assistant shows, such as Google’s featured snippet. GEO extends that idea to assistants that write their own text and blend several sources.

The practical difference between AEO and GEO is the shape of the result. AEO aims at a short answer lifted almost word for word from a single page. GEO aims at a long answer in which the brand can be named, recommended over others or cited with a link.

Many agencies use AEO and GEO interchangeably. When hiring, what matters is what gets measured: reporting only featured snippets is AEO; reporting mentions in ChatGPT or Gemini is GEO.

GEO vs AEO vs SEO in 2026: a comparison on the same criteria

Comparison

GEO, AEO and SEO differ mainly in where the result appears and how it is measured. The table compares them on the same five criteria.

All three disciplines share the same technical base. If a bot cannot fetch the page, or the content is not in the HTML, there is no SEO, no AEO and no GEO. The first thing to do is check whether AI crawlers can read your site.

Why GEO matters now: how many people already read AI answers

Context

GEO matters because AI answers already operate at search engine scale. In its earnings call of 22 July 2026, Alphabet said that Google’s AI Mode has passed one billion monthly active users and that the Gemini app has 950 million.

When there is an answer, people click less. Pew Research Center analysed the real browsing of 900 U.S. adults and reported on 22 July 2025 that users who saw an AI summary on Google clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% for those who did not see one. They clicked a link inside the summary itself in just 1%.

Part of the buying decision is now made inside the answer: if the assistant names a competitor, the customer may never reach the company’s site.

How much of GEO is already covered by SEO, and what is not

GEO and SEO

A large part of GEO is SEO done well. Google says so in its documentation on AI features in Search, checked on 16 October 2026: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”

What SEO does not cover is the answers in which the assistant does not search the web at all. In a DoGeo study of 1,230 Gemini runs (October 2026), 70% of the answers to questions about AI visibility and GEO asked in Spanish launched no search; with the same questions in English, 46%.

It is one model and one topic, but enough to show that a Google ranking does not always come into play. When Gemini does not search, what counts is what has been published about the brand away from its own site: media, directories, comparisons and forums.

How assistants decide which sources to read and cite when they do search is covered in how AI models choose which sources to cite.

Data: how SEO and GEO add up at Kulturo and HeyTalent

Data

At DoGeo’s two clients with a published case study, GEO took nothing away from SEO: so far in 2026, Google impressions, clicks and AI citations have all grown together, according to each company’s data.

  • Kulturo, a client since January 2026: Google impressions +140% and clicks +56% against the previous period (1,260 clicks and 254,000 impressions), and 8,700 AI citations in three months, with an average of 10 pages cited, according to Kulturo’s AI performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • HeyTalent, a client since February 2026: Google impressions +591% and clicks +346% against the previous period (1,650 clicks and 328,000 impressions), and 14,200 AI citations in three months, with an average of 19 pages cited, according to HeyTalent’s data.
  • Google’s generative AI features: Kulturo had 72,992 impressions from 18/05/2026 to 14/09/2026, and HeyTalent went from 1,485 impressions in the week of 15/06/2026 to 9,500 in the week of 08/09/2026, 6.4 times as many, according to each company’s generative AI features report in Google Search Console.

In both cases impressions grow faster than clicks, which is consistent with answers that stay on the search page without proving it. Impressions in AI features are not clicks or citations, and the report is in beta.

The result that matters most is commercial: HeyTalent gets between 2 and 3 demos a week from people who arrived by asking ChatGPT, according to HeyTalent’s data. The full story is in the HeyTalent case study.

Is SEO dead now that AI answers the question

SEO in 2026

SEO is not dead: it remains the way into GEO, because many assistants search the web before they answer and Google asks for the same practices for its AI features as for classic search. What has changed is what a good Google ranking can be expected to deliver.

What has lost value is the click: when Google shows an AI summary, people click classic results less, and a page ranking first can get fewer visits without losing its position.

So in 2026, on top of rankings and clicks, it matters whether the brand appears in the answer. Dropping SEO for GEO loses the base that searching assistants rely on; doing only SEO misses the answers that do not search.

Can an SEO agency do GEO

Provider

An SEO agency can do GEO if it works on three things classic SEO rarely checks: that AI assistants’ bots can read the site, that the content can be quoted sentence by sentence, and that presence in the answers is measured. If it only reports rankings, it is not doing GEO.

Before handing GEO to an SEO agency, ask it four questions:

  • Which AI bots it checks besides Googlebot, and where it looks for blocks: in robots.txt, at the CDN or in the firewall.
  • Which fixed set of questions it uses to measure whether assistants name the brand, and how often it repeats it.
  • What source backs each figure it publishes on the client’s pages.
  • How it knows that a customer came from an AI assistant and not from Google.

How GEO is measured

Measurement

GEO is measured with four sources together: a fixed set of questions put to the assistants every month, the AI reports in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, a log of AI bots in the site’s firewall, and what each customer says when they sign.

  • Fixed question set: it shows whether the brand appears, where, and whether what is said about it is correct. How to build one is in the guide to tracking rankings and AI visibility.
  • Google Search Console: its generative AI features report gives the site’s impressions in Google’s AI answers.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools: its AI performance report counts citations and cited pages.
  • What the customer says: “how did you hear about us?” is the only source that separates a customer who came through an assistant from one who came through Google.

To know whether an assistant reads the site, the technical method is to log its bots in the firewall or the CDN. A rule records, without blocking, the requests from each bot, identified by its user-agent (the name it presents itself with) and verified by IP where the provider publishes its ranges. This is what DoGeo sets up for each client, and those logs show which pages each bot visits and when.

Each bot tells you something different. OAI-SearchBot, according to OpenAI, is used to surface websites in ChatGPT’s search results, so its visits show which pages enter that index. Claude-User, according to Anthropic, is the agent Claude uses to open a site when a person asks it something: the closest signal that the assistant has read the page in a conversation. Training bots only speak to training. The log does not see what the assistant writes: for that, the fixed question set is still needed.

Where to start with GEO on each assistant

Next step

GEO starts with what every assistant shares: its bots must be able to read the site, the content must be in the HTML without depending on JavaScript, and each page must answer a question with figures and a source. Each assistant also has its own bots and its own guide.
