Wix alternatives and how to migrate without losing rank
When Wix falls short and when it does not, which alternative fits each kind of site, and the five steps to switch tools without Google losing track of your pages.
Published 7 October 2026
Short answer
The main Wix alternatives are self-hosted WordPress for content-heavy sites, Squarespace for small sites with no technical person behind them, Shopify for online shops and a coded site for anyone who needs full control. Leaving Wix only pays off when the site hits a real limit of the tool, not because of speed, where Wix now scores well. Because Wix does not let you take a site to another server, migrating means rebuilding it and pointing every old URL to its new one with a 301 redirect.
What is a Wix site migration
DefinitionA Wix migration is the process of rebuilding the site in another tool and making every old address lead to its new equivalent with a 301 redirect, the signal that tells browsers and search engines a page has moved for good. It is not an export: Wix does not allow one.
The Wix Help Center puts it this way: the content built on Wix belongs to its owner, but the site cannot be hosted anywhere else because it runs on Wix’s proprietary technology and relies on Wix’s services. Nor is there a way to export blog posts to another tool, according to the same help center.
What you do keep is the domain. Wix documents how to transfer a domain bought from Wix to another host, and a domain bought elsewhere can be pointed at the new site by changing its DNS records.
When leaving Wix is worth it and when it is not
DiagnosisLeaving Wix is worth it when the site needs something Wix does not allow: hosting it wherever you want, controlling all of its code or publishing at a pace the editor cannot keep up with. It is not worth it for speed or basic SEO, where Wix does better than its reputation.
On speed, Wix passes. According to the CMS chapter of HTTP Archive’s 2025 Web Almanac, published on 15 January 2026, 74% of Wix sites passed Core Web Vitals on mobile, up from 55% the year before; WordPress stood at 45%. Core Web Vitals are the three metrics Google uses to measure how a page loads for real users.
On basic SEO too. The Wix Help Center documents a robots.txt editor, page-by-page structured data in JSON-LD format and a 301 redirect manager.
Nor is Wix a niche choice: according to W3Techs, as of 3 October 2026 it runs 4.2% of all websites and holds 6.1% among those using a known content management system.
Leaving Wix pays off if:
- the site has to live on a server or CDN the company chooses
- the plan is to publish hundreds of pages generated from your own data
- you need to change the HTML that is served, not just the tags the editor exposes
- the company wants to be able to switch providers without rebuilding the site again
It does not pay off if:
- the site has few pages and a non-technical person maintains it without trouble
- speed is the only reason
- nobody will maintain the new site after launch
Wix alternatives in 2026: which one fits each site
ComparisonThe Wix alternatives in 2026 split by who maintains the site and how much control they give over the code: self-hosted WordPress, Squarespace, Shopify and a coded site. All of them accept 301 redirects, the minimum condition for migrating without losing rankings.
| Alternative | Best fit | Who maintains it | Control over the HTML | How 301s are set up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted WordPress | Blogs and content-heavy sites with a technical person available | The owner or their provider | Full, plugins included | With a plugin or on the server |
| Squarespace | Small sites maintained by a non-technical person | Squarespace | Whatever the editor allows | With its URL mappings tool |
| Shopify | Online shops | Shopify | Whatever its themes allow | With its URL redirect manager |
| Coded site | Projects that publish a lot and want full control | The owner or their provider | Full: the code belongs to the owner | On the server or the CDN, with no limit set by a tool |
What you can take from Wix and what you have to rebuild
InventoryFrom Wix you take the domain and the content, but not the site: the design, the templates and the code that make it work stay on Wix and have to be rebuilt in the new tool. Text and images are copied over; blog posts by hand or with a script, because Wix does not export them.
- Kept: the domain, the text, the images and the address of every page, which are the basis of the redirect map.
- Rebuilt: the design, the menu structure, the forms and any feature that depends on a Wix app.
- Checked one by one: title and description tags, structured data and image alt text, which do not travel on their own.
How to migrate from Wix without losing rankings, step by step
ChecklistMigrating from Wix without losing rankings comes down to five steps: list every URL, redirect each one with a 301, rebuild the content without changing it, check that crawlers can read the new site and watch Search Console for weeks.
- 01 / INVENTORY
List every URL of the Wix site
The list comes from the Wix sitemap, the Search Console pages report and a crawl of the site. Add the URLs that receive links from other sites, which you find when you check who links to your site: they lose the most value if they end in a 404 error.
- 02 / REDIRECTS
Redirect each old URL to its equivalent with a 301
One row per URL: old address and new address, the closest in content, never the home page for all of them. Google’s guide to site moves with URL changes asks you not to remove them early: “Keep the redirects for as long as possible, generally at least 1 year.”
- 03 / CONTENT
Rebuild the content without rewriting it
The text, headings, titles and structured data of each page move to the new site unchanged. If you also rewrite it and rankings shift, there is no telling whether the migration or the new text caused it.
- 04 / CRAWLING
Check that search engines and assistants can read the new site
The new robots.txt must not block anything that was open before, and the new host’s firewall must not stop the bots. You can check whether AI crawlers can read the site for free and without giving an email, right after launch.
- 05 / VERIFICATION
Watch Search Console in the following weeks
Submit the new sitemap, test several old addresses with the URL Inspection tool and follow the 404 errors in the pages report. To see whether keywords hold, it helps to track your Google rankings before and after the switch.
What happened to traffic in DoGeo’s migrations
DataIn DoGeo’s migrations, Google traffic did not drop. When Kulturo moved from Webflow to code with all its URLs redirected by 301, its Google clicks in the following three weeks were 69.2% higher than in the three weeks before, according to Search Console.
Kulturo switched on 24 August 2026: 396 clicks and 66,910 impressions from 24 August to 13 September, against 234 clicks and 56,307 impressions from 3 to 23 August. Those three weeks coincide with Kulturo’s record impressions in Google’s AI answers, so the figure shows that no traffic was lost, not that migrating made it rise. The full case is in Kulturo’s results with DoGeo.
Leaving Wix has its own precedent: a site specialising in rigid inflatable boats moved from Wix to code, also with 301 redirects, and the DoGeo team states that no traffic was lost in any of its migrations.
Today, now on code, Kulturo’s home page passes Core Web Vitals on mobile, with an LCP, the time until the main element appears, of 1.4 seconds and a CLS of 0, according to the real-user Chrome data shown in PageSpeed Insights for the 28 days to 17 September 2026.
Cost is part of the decision too: when Kulturo moved from Webflow to code, hosting went from about $50 a month to $20 a month on Vercel, which over three years is $720 against about $1,800. The $20 is the team plan, which hosts several projects, and covers hosting only, not development.
What a site gains outside Wix for appearing in AI answers
GEOOutside Wix, a site mainly gains control: it decides what HTML each bot receives, which bots get in and how content is published. That matters because AI assistants cite passages they can lift from the HTML without effort.
Assistant crawlers generally read the HTML the server returns in its first response. A coded site or a well-configured WordPress can serve all the text, tables and structured data there, and add a Markdown version of each page.
Control alone is not enough to get cited. Which sources models choose also depends on authority and on what other sites say, as explained in how AI models choose their sources. What leaving Wix gives you is the ability to tune the part that depends on your own site.
