How to Appear in Grok and Get Your Brand Mentioned

Grok answers inside X as well as on its own website and apps, and it can search both the web and the posts on X. What decides whether it names a company, and what can and cannot be checked today.

Short answer

Appearing in Grok means being named, and ideally linked, in the answers written by xAI’s assistant, which runs on grok.com, in its mobile apps and inside X. Grok reaches a company in two ways: through what its model learned during training, and through what it finds when it calls its web search or X search tools. Nobody can buy or request a place in those answers, so the work is making the company’s own pages easy to extract, keeping its name and its accounts on X consistent, and getting other sources to describe it the same way. Because xAI documents no crawler of its own, measuring Grok relies on brand mentions in its answers and on visits it sends, not on server logs.

What is appearing in Grok

Definition

Appearing in Grok is being named in an answer written by xAI’s assistant, sometimes with a link to the page it leaned on. It is a mention inside generated text, not a position in a list of results, and the same answer can name a brand without linking to its site.

Grok is the assistant built by xAI. According to the registration statement SpaceX filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on 20 May 2026, Grok Chat is available on grok.com, in dedicated mobile apps, inside X and through the xAI API, with real-time integration of web search and X data.

The same filing gives the scale. Across Grok and X there were approximately 550 million monthly active users, and approximately 117 million of them had used Grok’s AI features as of 31 March 2026. For a company, that is an audience large enough to be worth checking, reached through an assistant that lives inside a social network.

The practical consequence of the definition is that there is no switch to flip. Grok decides which brands to name when it writes the answer, and a company influences that decision only through what is published about it, on its own site, on X and on other people’s pages.

When Grok searches the web and X, and when it answers from memory

The two modes

Grok answers from its training data unless it calls a search tool. xAI’s developer documentation states that Grok has no knowledge of current events beyond its training data, and that real-time information comes from two server-side tools: Web Search and X Search.

The training data has a date. xAI gives May 2026 as the knowledge cut-off of Grok 4.7, the model in its current documentation, consulted on 22 October 2026. What the model knows about a company without searching comes from what was published before then, mostly on sites the company does not control.

Web Search, in xAI’s words, lets Grok search the web in real time and browse pages to extract information. X Search is a separate tool that runs keyword search, semantic search, user search and thread fetch on X. The two are called independently, so a company can be visible in one and absent from the other.

Search does not always produce a link. xAI’s documentation on citations says that turning them on does not mean the model will cite sources in every answer, and that not every URL it looked at is referenced in the final text. A brand can therefore shape an answer without being linked, which is why mentions matter on this engine.

The two routes to appear in Grok compared

The routes

There are two routes into a Grok answer, the model’s memory and live search, and live search splits into the web and X. Each one is fed by different sources, reacts at a different speed and leaves a different trace.

Route into the answerWhat feeds itWhat a company controlsWhat it leaves behind
Model memory (training data)What was published before the model’s cut-off date, May 2026 for Grok 4.7Only indirectly: how other sources described the company before that dateA mention with no link
Web Search toolPages Grok finds and browses on the web at the moment of the questionIts own pages: whether they answer the question and can be extractedA mention, sometimes with an inline link
X Search toolPosts, threads and profiles on XIts own account and its spokespeople’s accounts; partly, what others postA mention, sometimes with a link to a post

Read across the rows, the table explains why a fix on the website moves only one route out of three. A company that rewrites its pages improves what the Web Search tool can extract, but the model’s memory changes only with the next training run, and X Search depends on what is posted on X. How each assistant decides which sources to cite is covered surface by surface in how AI models choose their sources.

Why X matters for appearing in Grok

X

X matters for Grok because Grok can search it directly and because xAI presents that link as its edge. In SpaceX’s registration statement of 20 May 2026, the company writes: “Grok’s deep integration with X enables freshness, relevance, and contextual awareness that we believe is a competitive differentiator.”

The same filing gives the volume Grok can draw on: approximately 350 million posts a day across X. A company that never posts is absent from that stream, and whatever Grok finds about it on X is what other people wrote.

X Search works at the level of accounts. xAI’s documentation lets a developer restrict X Search to up to 20 named handles, or exclude up to 20, which shows that the tool reasons about who posted, not only about what was posted. One official handle, with the same company name and the same one-line description as the website, is easier for Grok to connect to the brand than several half-used accounts.

X is not, however, where most of Grok’s links point. In a measurement Ahrefs published on 1 June 2026, covering more than 1.9 million US queries, x.com ranked twelfth among the domains Grok cited, with 1.4% of the citations. The useful reading is that X shapes what Grok knows and says about a brand, while the links in its answers still go mostly to other websites.

Which websites Grok cites most

The sources

In Ahrefs’ measurement for June 2026, Reddit, YouTube and Facebook are the three websites Grok cites most. Ahrefs tracked every domain Grok cited across more than 1.9 million US queries on all topics, and Reddit alone took 16.3% of the citations among the top 50 domains.

RankWebsiteShare of citationsWhat it means for a company
1reddit.com16.3%What customers say in forums reaches the answer

3facebook.com13.9%Public pages and posts on a social network reach the answer
5quora.com5.5%Questions and answers written by users are retrieved well
8en.wikipedia.org3.4%An encyclopaedia entry, where a company qualifies for one, counts
12x.com1.4%Posts on X are a small share of the links Grok gives
Ahrefs, “The 50 Most-Cited Websites in Grok (June 2026)”, published 1 June 2026, data from Ahrefs Brand Radar for the United States, all topics. Share is each domain’s citations as a percentage of the summed citations of the top 50 domains. Consulted on 22 October 2026.

The figures come with limits. They cover US queries in one month, they are measured by a company that sells AI visibility tracking, and the shares are calculated only over the 50 most-cited domains. They show where Grok’s links tend to go, not what it says about any one brand.

For a company, the list points away from its own website. Most of what Grok cites is written by users on large sites, which is why the work on this engine is as much about being mentioned on other people’s pages as about publishing.

Does Grok have a crawler you can allow in robots.txt

The robot

No. xAI’s developer documentation, consulted in full on 22 October 2026, names no crawler and no user agent, the name a robot gives when it requests a page. Without a documented name, there is no line to write in the robots.txt file to let Grok in or keep it out.

Any name for a Grok robot found in third-party lists is therefore a guess, not a documented fact. A company should not build rules around a name the provider itself does not confirm.

What a company can still check is that nothing blocks robots in general. A bot-protection rule at the firewall or at the CDN, the layer that serves a site before the server does, can stop any automated visit without anyone deciding so. Checking whether AI robots can read the site shows whether the pages are reachable at all, which is the condition for the Web Search tool to read them.

How to appear in Grok step by step

The four steps

The four steps follow the three routes into a Grok answer: the website for Web Search, X for X Search, and other people’s pages for the model’s memory. None of them buys a placement, and none promises a result.

  1. 01 / ACCESS

Step 1: make sure the website can be read without a browser

Grok’s Web Search tool browses pages to extract information, so what counts is what the server sends back, not what a browser assembles later. Prices, terms and concrete answers have to be in the HTML of the first response, and no firewall rule should be stopping automated visits by default.

  2. 02 / TEXT

Step 2: write pages that answer one question each

An assistant lifts fragments, not whole sites. A section that answers its question in the first sentences, names the company instead of saying “we” and carries its figures with a source can be reused in an answer as it stands. The method is set out in how to optimize content for AI assistants.

  3. 03 / X

Step 3: keep one active, consistent presence on X

X Search finds posts, threads and profiles, and can be narrowed to named accounts. One official handle with the company name and the same one-line description as the website, plus spokespeople who post about the subject they want to be known for, gives Grok something to find and attribute.

  4. 04 / MENTIONS

Step 4: get described the same way on other sites

The model’s memory and most of Grok’s links come from pages the company does not own. Reviews, forum answers, videos and industry listings that describe the company with the same name, category and audience are what make Grok repeat that description instead of guessing.

How to tell whether Grok mentions your brand

Measurement

There is no report from xAI that tells a company how often Grok names it. Two traces remain: the visits Grok sends, which web analytics can separate, and the answers themselves, which only a fixed set of questions repeated every month can follow.

Visits are the easier part. According to Google Analytics help, consulted on 22 October 2026, Google Analytics 4 groups visits from assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek or Grok into a channel called “AI Assistant”. That channel only counts people who clicked a link in an answer.

Server logs help less here than on other assistants. The standard method is a rule at the firewall or the CDN that logs, without blocking, the requests from each AI provider’s robot, identified by its user agent and, where the provider publishes its addresses, verified by IP. This is what DoGeo sets up for each client, with a monthly count per robot and per page. With no documented name, Grok’s visits cannot be isolated in those logs today.

What neither source shows is what Grok writes. Whether it names the company, how it describes it and which page it links are only visible by asking Grok the same questions every month, on grok.com and on X, and recording the answers. That is slower than a report, and it is the measurement this engine allows.
